YOUNG ADULT REVIEW: The Medusa Project: The Set-Up - Sophie McKenzie

BOOK BLURB:
Fourteen years ago, scientist William Fox implanted four babies with the Medusa gene - a gene for psychic abilities. But Fox died and the babies were hidden away for years. Now the children are teenagers - and unaware that their psychic powers are about to kick in. Cocky, charismatic Nico thinks his emerging telekinetic abilities will bring him money, power and the girl of his dreams. He's about to find out just how wrong he is...

REVIEW:
Sophie tends to be one of those authors that you either love or hate so I always like to try her work even though at times I can swing from one camp to the other. What unfurls in the First novel in The Medusa Project series (Set Up) is a concept that is pretty cool, its mind boggling with a basic principle that is as brilliant as it is simple.

What however does let her down is character development, ie there just wasn’t much of it and to have a male protagonist that really didn’t seem to fit the concepts or general map of that genders psychi and felt a bit lax in the lack of connectability with the character to be honest. Add to this the problems of a predictable outline and I soon found that it wasn’t a tale that I could really get behind even though I really wanted to as the set up was pretty original. A great shame although I will read subsequent novels in this series just to see if she fixes the problems.
