FANTASY REVIEW: The Dwarves - Markus Heitz

BOOK BLURB:

For countless millennia, no man or beast has ever succeeded in breaching the stone gateway into Girdlegard. Until now ...Abandoned as a child, Tungdil the blacksmith is the only dwarf in a kingdom of men. But when he is sent out into the world to deliver a message and reacquaint himself with his people, the young foundling finds himself thrust into a battle for which he has not been trained. Not only his own safety, but the life of every man, woman and child in Girdlegard depends upon his ability to embrace his heritage. Although he has many unanswered questions, Tungdil is certain of one thing: no matter where he was raised, he is a true dwarf. And no one has ever questioned the courage of the Dwarves.

REVIEW:

Published for the first time in English, this offering from German, Makus Heitz, is sure to hit all the right buttons with the readers, its got a tale that will suck you in with it’s classical fantasy elements of Dwarves (as the title suggests), Elves and Magicians both good and evil. What also is worth bearing in mind is that its part of a Quartet to date with the second part due to follow shortly for the modern reader. Add to the mix a tale that’s well told, gripping characterisation and a mindset of sheer determination that has won Heitz an audience the world over. This book, I feel, will top a number of lists towards Christmas as word spreads of the authors talent coupled by an excellent translation from the original language. Remember who gave you the nod when you finally get round to discovering it.
