URBAN FANTASY REVIEW: The Devil's Playground - Jenna Black

BOOK BLURB:

No one ever wants to serve in Hell...The Seven Deadlies, a demon club in Philadelphia, has always catered to the most attractive and desirable hosts. Recently, though, more and more of the lower dregs of society have been showing up with demons of their own - in alarming numbers. Morgan is sure that Dougal is behind this, but isn't sure why. Is Dougal building an army to snatch the throne of the demons from Lugh? If there's one person who can get to the bottom of this, it's Morgan Kingsley, but caught between her mortal lover Brian and the demon she lusts for, Lugh, it's going to take everything she has to keep her head - and heart - in the game.

REVIEW:

Having read and enjoyed the other titles in this series, I was a little apprehensive as to how the author was going to conclude so many threads in so short a time. Back that up with the previous offering that felt like it had stalled slightly, to allow the author a tad more time to reach the epic finale that the readers have been demanding will make this a make or break title for her as a writer.

What unfurls within this offering is a title that really felt that it was a bit of a let down, as if the last part of the bake on a superb soufflĂ© was giving great promise only to go flat in the final part. The character as you’d come to expect was just as strong but rather than an explosive ending it felt more like a sad little poof instead of the bang you’d expect after such careful sculpting in the previous offerings.

That said however the writing is as engaging as ever, the dialogue just as haunting but above all it’s the character mĂ©nage a trios interaction that is the piece that really will keep you hooked. With a ton of threads still left to conclude this may not be the final title as has previously been claimed and I for one hope that Jenna will reexplore these in the future to give all the readers the ending that they not only demand but deserve for their expectations.

URBAN FANTASY REVIEW: Speak of the Devil - Jenna Black

BOOK BLURB:

Hosting the king of the demons is hard enough without becoming the target of a mysterious enemy with a deadly grudge. To make things worse, Morgan must also defend herself against a lawsuit that won't die and a private investigator determined to unearth her every secret. With anonymous death threats piling up and her enemy closing in, Morgan stands to lose everything she holds dear: her reputation, her boyfriend, her freedom - and maybe even her life.

REVIEW:

Having enjoyed the previous three books in Jenna’s series the forth was building up for an epic confrontation and what happens is that Morgan (the principle protagonista) is really in for the emotional as well as physical ass kicking of her career. What works really well in this series for me, is that the author doesn’t pull punches and will take the character where she needs to go to gain emotional growth. Whilst it won’t be the favourite book of many fans and can come across a little slow at times, the emotional aspects as well as the psychological ones that unfurl within only seek to make Morgan stronger for the final conflict. Great fun but not the book to start with, go for the original and work your way up here, you’ll be glad you did.

During the brief time that Claudia had been on a cruise, her son, Tommy, changed from an invective-spewing member of the anti-demon society God's Wrath to a happy little demon host. Claudia smells a rat - as does Morgan - but all the paperwork looks legal. That is, until Morgan begins digging up the secrets of Tommy's past and finds herself deep in another deadly conspiracy...

REVIEW:

An unusual series for an unusual author, yet that said it’s a real combo of Supernatural in the vein of LKH’s Merry Gentry and Anita Blake with a couple of exceptions. Firstly its plot driven and secondly the sex, whilst there is all in time to the lulls and peaks of the writing making it a beneficial part of the series. Its got high octane combat, cracking characterisation and above all a plot that really will entertain and makes this an ideal read for those who love supernatural erotica/romance.
