VIDEO GAME NEWS: Middle Earth: Shadow of War - Warner Brothers Interactive

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Calloused Thumbs,
Our friends at Warner Brothera have let us know about the forthcoming Shadow of War, here's what they had to say:

"Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced Middle-earth: Shadow of War™, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor™, winner of more than 50 industry awards, including 2015 Game Developers Choice Awards’ Game of the Year, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming at the 2015 D.I.C.E. Awards and the BAFTA for Game Design. Developed by Monolith Productions, Middle-earth: Shadow of War™ features an original story with the return of Talion and Celebrimbor, who must go behind enemy lines to forge an army and turn all of Mordor against the Dark Lord, Sauron.

In Middle-earth: Shadow of War™, players wield a new Ring of Power and confront the deadliest of enemies, including Sauron and his Nazgul, in a monumental battle for Middle-earth. The open-world action-adventure game is brought to life through the expansion of the award-winning Nemesis System. The robust personalization from the first game is now applied to the entire world where the environments and characters are all shaped by player actions and decisions, creating a personal world unique to every gameplay experience.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War™ will be available for Xbox One, Project Scorpio, Windows 10 PC (Windows Store and Steam™), PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®4 Pro beginning 25 August, 2017. Middle-earth: Shadow of War™ will be available as an Xbox Play Anywhere title.

“Monolith Productions continues to innovate by introducing deeper, more personalised gameplay experiences, coupled with authentic storytelling,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Middle-earth: Shadow of War™ truly drives the genre forward by taking the Nemesis System to new heights and allowing players to create their own personal journey within Middle-earth.”

“Following the amazing reception to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor™, we massively expanded every dimension of the game, including the world, the story, the RPG systems, the core gameplay and of course the personal player stories of the Nemesis System,” said Michael de Plater, Vice President, Creative, Monolith Productions. “As lifelong fans of Middle-earth, we are so grateful to have the privilege to bring to life the most incredible fantasy world ever created in a new way, for a new generation. With Middle-earth: Shadow of War™, we can’t wait to see the amazing stories players are going to create and share.”

The innovative Nemesis System created unique personal stories through procedurally-generated enemies who remember every encounter and are differentiated by their personality, strengths and weaknesses. Middle-earth: Shadow of War™ expands this innovation with the introduction of Followers who bring about entirely new stories of loyalty, betrayal and revenge. The Nemesis System is also expanded to create a unique personal world through Nemesis Fortresses, which allows players to utilize different strategies to conquer dynamic strongholds and create personalized worlds with their unique Orc army.

Set between the events of The Hobbit™ and The Lord of the Rings™, Middle-earth: Shadow of War™ continues the original narrative of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor™. Players will be engrossed in a richer, more personal and expansive world full of epic heroes and villains, iconic locations, original enemy types, even more personalities and a new cast of characters with untold stories.

As an Xbox Play Anywhere title, players can purchase a digital version of Middle-earth: Shadow of War™ once and play it on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Gamers can pick up where they left off on another Xbox One or Windows 10 PC, bringing all the saves, game add-ons and achievements with them at no additional cost."

VIDEO GAME NEWS: Deus Ex: Manking Divided Delayed - Square Enix

Hail Mighty Reader and Followers of the Calloused Thumbs,
Our friends at Square Enix and Eidos have contacted us, asking that we let you know that they're delaying the release of the latest title in the Deus Ex Frnachise and why.  Here's what they had to say:
"As you may have already seen by reading and watching the many previews for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, our aim is for it to be a worthy successor to Human Revolution, and to improve upon that game in every way possible. I know that expectations are extremely high, and we not only want to meet those expectations, but exceed them.

We’re confident and proud of the game so far. However, as we are now playing through the game in full we can see that it will require more time in post-production for tuning, iterations, and refinement to meet our high standards. In order to achieve this, we need to move the release of the game to August 23rd, 2016.

We are sorry to disappoint you with this news, and also thank you for all of your support and comments. This game is a huge part of our lives, and we don’t want to compromise on its quality.

So please be patient with us a little longer, and thanks as always for your passion and support – through thick and thin. It’s a huge responsibility to work on Deus Ex Mankind Divided - we know, but also a huge privilege. We’re determined to deliver the best game we can.

David Anfossi – Eidos-Montreal Head of Studio"

VIDEO GAME NEWS: Fallout 4 Launch Trailer - Bethesda

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Calloused Thumbs,
Our friends at Bethesda have released the launch trailer for Fallout 4, coming to consoles on the 10th November 2015.  Its pretty dark and from the look of things we can't wait to embark on adventuring into the unknown facing down foes and building our own town from the ashes of the Wasteland.

Here's the trailer:

Also please remember that you still have time to purchase the Fallout 4 special Season Pass that includes:

Regular Updates

We'll be doing regular free updates to the game, and like Skyrim, these will come with not just fixes, but new features. For Skyrim we added things like mounted combat, legendary mode, kill cams, visual enhancements and more. We’ll work with all of you to figure out what new things you’d love to see added to Fallout 4, whether they are small tweaks or new features.

Mods & Creation Kit

The most important thing in our games is the freedom you have to create your own experience, and modding is a big part of that. Like all our previous games, we’ve made sure to keep Fallout 4 open and moddable at every step in development. Early next year we’ll release for free the new Creation Kit for the PC. This is the same tool we use in the studio. You'll be able to create your own mods and share them with others. We’re especially excited these same mods will then be coming to Xbox One, and then PlayStation 4.

Downloadable Content

We've always done a lot of DLC for our games. We love making them and you always ask us for more. To reward our most loyal fans, this time we’ll be offering a Season Pass that will get you all of the Fallout 4 DLC we ever do for just $30. Since we’re still hard at work on the game, we don’t know what the actual DLC will be yet, but it will start coming early next year. Based on what we did for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim, we know that it will be worth at least $40, and if we do more, you'll get it all with the Season Pass.
Thanks again to all of you! The support and excitement you’ve given Fallout 4 has blown us away. It’s energized us even more to do everything we can in these final months to make this our best game yet. We absolutely can't wait for you to play it, and share your adventures with us and each other."

We can't wait to see what will be coming to Fallout 4 from friends and other modders, and hopefully see you in the far future,

VIDEO GAME NEWS: Elder Scrolls Online Announces Orsinium - Bethesda

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Calloused Thumbs,
Lady Eleanor and I have been roaming the towns and cities of ESO (we've both completed the Cadwell's Gold goals) and have been venturing into Cyrodil working our way up in order to tackle trials as well as venturing into Imperial City (the DLC that dropped last month.)

With this in mind, we were totally boggled to hear about the next DLC dropping on the 17th November (for Xbox One and the 18th for PS4.)

Here's the trailer for Orsinium:

Which also brings this to the table:
  • Over 20 hours of captivating story content and quests
  • A long-awaited exploration of the culture of Tamriel's Orcs
  • A colossal new zone available to characters of all levels
  • A new single-player progressive challenge, The Maelstrom Arena
    • Available in Normal and Veteran versions
    • Grants special rewards only obtainable by completing arenas
    • Includes class-specific leaderboards, so you can see how you match up against your fellow combatants
  • Quests and objectives that contribute to rebuilding the city of Orsinium, returning it to its former glory
  • Two large public dungeons, Old Orsinium and Rkindaleft, featuring all-new challenges for both solo and group play
  • Special harvest nodes that scale to the most advanced material type your character can use for crafting
  • Six all-new, challenging world bosses
  • Powerful new gear, unique crafting styles, and other rewards inspired by the history and denizens of Wrothgar
    • Four new Provisioner recipes, only available in Wrothgar
    • 18 powerful new item sets including 6 ability-altering weapons, 9 sets obtained by participating in activities in Wrothgar, and 3 new craftable sets
    • The Ancient Orc crafting style
    • Six new collectible costumes only available in Wrothgar
  • Over an hour of brand new in-game musical score

In addition to this we've also heard some more news about changes to the standard ESO which will make your ventures not only more fun but fairer.  They are:
  • Gamepad support
  • Subtitles
  • LFG improvements – cross-alliance dungeons
  • Champion Point cap & catch-up system
  • Shield Dyeing
  • Improvements to battle-leveling
  • Akaviri crafting style
  • Ability balance and bug fixes
  • New ways to spend Alliance Points
  • Increased item drop rates
Now out of all this, the main thing that we've noticed and liked is that they're limiting Champion Points to 500 (currently I'm around 91) and whilst a lot of us on the console version don't have that yet, it means that people who have transported their characters over from PC will also be limited so that it will make for a more even fight and that we won't be over powered when five of us jump on another level 14 character and get pummeled.

All round we're getting pretty excited and with us preparing for our guilds Trails adventuring, we're also grinding for Orsinium.

See you in Cyrodil,

Gareth and Lady Eleanor

VIDEO GAME NEWS: Fallout 4 Friday Fiesta with Perk Chart and Character System VBlog - Betheda

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Calloused Thumbs,
Our friends at Bethesda have sent us a couple of tasty treats to help you get into the weekend spirit.

Here's what they had to say:"At the heart of Fallout 4 is its character system. Our games are about making the kind of character you want, doing what you want, and having the game allow and reward whatever playstyle you chose. We also want to make those choices meaningful, and at the same time entertaining. To let you plan ahead, try different things, and to compare your choices against others who built different characters.

The Fallout series makes this even better through the use of the seven SPECIAL stats and its Perks. We made it a goal of ours to have the choice of your SPECIALs be as meaningful as possible, and be the guide for how you built your character through the course of the game.

The first choice you make, early in the game, is the starting value from 1 to 10 of your 7 SPECIALs: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Each week we’re releasing videos that give you a look at what those skills do in the game (from Vault-Tec, of course). Fallout 4 – S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Video Series.

When selecting your starting SPECIALs, you can assign 28 points. This makes it difficult to initially max out certain SPECIALs, but you can still start with a 10 if you choose to neglect others. Even though you pick your SPECIALS early before the bombs fall, we do let you change them when exiting the Vault into the Wasteland, after you’ve played for a little.

Levelling is experience point (XP) based like Fallout 3, not skill-based like Skyrim. But levelling speed is closer to Skyrim, and not as slow as Fallout 3. This means you’ll be getting more opportunities, especially early on, to level up and select a Perk. Additionally, whereas Fallout 3 had an initial level cap of 20, Fallout 4 has no level cap, and we’ve balanced the game to keep the content and challenge going for higher levels.

When you level up, you select a Perk, from a Perk chart within the game. Here it is:

As you can see, each SPECIAL has a Perk assigned for each rank of the SPECIAL, from 1 to 10. You can select any Perk up to the rank of your SPECIAL. If you have a 10 in Charisma, you can select the Intimidation Perk that lets you manipulate human enemies into doing your bidding.

It was our goal that all the Perks be balanced amongst each other, regardless of if they required a 1 or a 10. The higher the SPECIAL requirement, the more focused or exotic the Perk was for that playstyle. Take for example the Agility 1 Perk Gunslinger (20% more damage with pistols), and the Agility 10 Perk Gun Fu (your 2nd target in V.A.T.S. takes 25% more damage regardless of weapon).
What’s important is that each of these Perks is actually a mini Perk tree*, with multiple ranks that also do new things. Gun Fu above allows even more damage the more targets you select, increasing to instant Critical Shots. Gunslinger has ranks that up the range of pistols, add a chance to disarm enemies, and even instant limb crippling shots.

These additional ranks do require your character to be a higher level. This allows us to make some powerful Perk ranks that reward your investment in a certain SPECIAL as well as that individual Perk. It also allows us to fold Perks we liked from previous games into Perk ranks in this new system. For example, the Fallout 3 perk Paralyzing Palm (paralyze enemies through hand-to-hand), now becomes the Rank 5 Perk for Iron Fist. But you need to have chosen the previous 4 ranks of Iron Fist and be level 46. We also pushed old Perks to do new things at higher ranks. Strong Back doesn’t just up the amount you can carry; higher ranks of it allow you to fast-travel while encumbered or even run while encumbered at the cost of Action Points.

With each SPECIAL having 10 Perks, there are 70 base Perks. With Perk ranks, it increases that number to over 270. That number also includes a top-level Training perk for each SPECIAL, so that you can essentially skip a regular Perk and raise a SPECIAL by 1. This gives you the benefit of the new SPECIAL value, and allows access to higher Perks in future levels.

It may all sound complicated at first, and when you initially level up, the chart can be a little intimidating because you have so many options. But it’s incredibly elegant, and has allowed us to reward both investing early in a playstyle, as well as growing your character over the course of the game.

If you’re a longtime Fallout fan, you’ll notice that the Skills seen in previous games have been folded into this system. The previous Skill system had some confusing parts and ended up spreading your choices too thin. Some of you had questions like: “What’s better, the Charisma SPECIAL, or the Speech Skill? Why are assault rifles in Small Guns?” Additionally many Perks simply raised associated Skills. The Gun Nut Perk in Fallout 3 increased two separate Skills. In Fallout 4, the ranks of Gun Nut act as gates for modifying and crafting weapons. Sneak was a skill in Fallout 3, and you simply increased its value. In Fallout 4 Sneak becomes a Perk that not only makes you harder to detect, but wraps in previous perks like Silent Running and Light Step into its ranks. By wrapping these systems together, it keeps the emphasis on your SPECIALs and the level-up choices more rewarding.

And on top of all that, you also get separate Perks from the many in-game magazines you can find (there are over 100). Some of these grant an individual Perk, while others up the rank of a Perk associated with that magazine. For example, there’s a 10-issue run of Grognak the Barbarian comics that each give you an additional rank of the Barbarian Perk, which raises the critical damage of melee attacks.

Through the many years of Fallout 4 development, and the countless hours of playtesting, we think you’re going to love this system in action. We experimented with other systems, but found this one to be the most flexible and intuitive. Balancing all of the ranks, their individual efficacy, SPECIAL rank, and player level has been a huge task. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do, and share your character choices and playstyles with us once the game is out. We can’t wait for you to play.

Also please remember that Fallout 4 has a special one price Season Pass that includes:

VIDEO GAME NEWS: Bloodbowl ready's for its second Season - Focus Home Entertainment

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Calloused Thumbs,
Lets play Bloodbowl.  The season is about to launch in a week, where you can gouge, mutilate and stomp your foes into submission.

Here at Falcata Times, Lady Eleanor and I have both been looking at our teams and figuring out who we feel we could take to the championship and whilst we know that the game has you taking the Human's (the Reikland Reivers) from bottom to top, we each have our own personal favourites.  I'm looking more at  the Skaven or Lizardmen and Lady Eleanor wants either the Orcs or Dark Elves.

So whilst we're getting psyched up for our rivalry our friends at Cyanide, Games Workshop and Focus, have sent us the final trailer for the series.  Featuring the High Elves and Orcs:

We'll see you on the Astro-turf and remember its game on.

VIDEO GAME NEWS: For Honor: Samurai Warrior Spotlight - Ubisoft

Hail Mighty Readers and Followers of the Calloused Thumbs,
Having seen the trailer at E3 for For Honor, we've been keeping a careful eye for additional information as we're fascinated with the idea of being able to defend as well as attack with using the sword positioning.

Whilst its still some time off (and we're still in a quandry about which side we're taking (although we're leaning between Norse Warrior or Knight) its always helpful to watch the information about the various cultures you can play.

Here is the first one, for the Samurai:

We can't wait to see what else they bring to the fore and with luck, you'll join us on the battlefield.
