Stories create an emotional bond for the reader and to be honest this one is going to be tough for anyone who picks it up. Not because of the writing, its beautiful, but because of the subject matter that for me is based on the Josef Fritzl case, It's deeply harrowing, is emotionally draining and at the end of the day its content is disturbing as whilst we often claim that fiction is just that, when you can find real life parallels it makes it all the harder.
OK, so this book won't be for everyone and to be honest I'd have probably preferred not reading it due to how uncomfortable it made me feel as a voyeur within the scene. The principle character is believable, the dialogue solid and all round I have to say its a book that whilst I won't say that I'm pleased that I made it all the way through, was one that with its complexities and inner thoughts made this a real in-depth discovery into the mind of a prisoner. All round a book that you really should ask yourself questions about before embarking upon but if you do, be prepared for a number of nightmares as well as questions that this tale will end up leaving you asking yourself.

Ah, Ben Kane, a guilty pleasure of historical fiction and an author that i just love to spend time with, as his gritty war torn tales not only deliver what I want from the Historical Fiction point of view but also contains practical archaeology within as he's a man who has not only walked the Hadrian's Wall route but also to Italy in full Roman armour.
It all comes together within his work and when you add cracking principle characters to top notch dialogue that twists historical facts into a story that you don't want to break from all round gives you a story that is a pure gem to read.
Finally throw into the mix, some top notch sleight of hand and a writing style that puts you right in the thick of it and all round I was a more than happy reader. Magic.

Set in Britain, this book is a crime thriller that takes the reader to the heart of a crime scene and then travels back through the eyes of various participants bringing the story to its forthcoming confrontation. Its wonderfully written, with gripping prose, solid dialogue and characters that the reader will care about.
It also has some solid narrative that keeps the pages turning which when added with a good use of pace makes this a book that should be on your to be read pile. An absolute cracker.

The latest release from Ben Kane that takes readers back to the mighty days of Rome as readers are treated to high octane action, top notch prose and of course heroes that they want to spend time around. However whilst I still love sitting down with Ben’s writing, I did feel that unfortunately this title was a tad predictable with the treachery of a certain character within. Don’t get me wrong, you still get what you expect from a book by Ben, but when you lose some of the mystery surrounding it, you do tend to feel a little cheated.
All round it is a good read and one that I had a lot of fun spending the time with especially when the author gets into the practical archaeology of a legion bogged down by mud (probably inspired from the charity walk he did with Anthony Riches.)

The third outing for Ethan’s Marcus Shepard who faces difficult choices in this title as his ethics are waged against his family Its definitely a book that is definitely hardcore action, backed up with hard hitting prose and of course a plot that doesn’t let up from start to finish.
Add to this a principle character that doesn’t take it easy on those he encounters and all round I suspect he may well inspire a film or two.

Having been a fan of the first two books in the series I really was looking forward to the third, especially with the cliffhanger that the author left us with at the ned of the second. As readers are coming to expect from Debbie, this third (and conclusive title to the Witch Hunter series) is a title that not only gets to the heart of the matter but explores the characters point of view from a younger self. Its definitely something unusual and with some cracking supernatural writing, I really couldn’t wait to see how the tale would develop, after all in the conclusive part all bets are off as to the survivability of the principle character.
What Debbie does is weave a wonderfully delicious dark tale that has stunning prose and cracking dialogue which when added to an overall arc that will more than sate the reader, all round goes to show that she not only knows her market well but delivers satisfaction in spades. Great stuff.

The third outing for Ryan Drake and one that will more than please readers as Anya, a foe from previous outings reappears to foil our hero. Its definitely a quirky book, one that has an anti-villain that works delightfully well to counteract the hero, which for me is an essential. Back this up with a solid enough pace and dialogue that works well all round made this a book that I was more than happy to read through. All round a pleasing read although on a cautionary note, don’t pick this up until you’ve read the previous two as otherwise you’ll have missed a fair number of point as well as a hell of an adventure.

Murder, death, mystery and of course characters that you can’t help but love to spend time with. Why?
Well they’re fully rounded and whilst this is the third book by Kimberly it’s one that shows how an author with the right combination can quickly entrench themselves not only into the readers minds but also their TBR pile. In addition to cracking characters the prose and pace work wonderfully well and all round I was more than surprised when I turned the final page. I can’t wait for the next book and to see what else Kimberley brings to the fore. Magic.

Ah a real treat for fans of the Star War’s Universe as we get to see Ben in his early days. It’s full of action, has cracking prose and when added to top notch dialogue as well as having an author who clearly not only understands Ben but brings more a clearer understanding to a very complex character all round generates a story that was a pure joy to sit back and read.
All round a great book and one that I feel will really add something extra to the Star Wars Universe for fans. Just don’t let this one sail by you.

Ok, so I’ve not read any of this author’s writing before, but I’m a huge fan of a crime tale told well and with characters that I just love to spend time around, and that’s what Mark presents in this title in spades. The lead character, DI Jack Delaney, is not only well rounded, but a character with quirks and foibles that help make him more real in the readers mind, which when backed with a family that steps straight from the page into a believable house next door, all rounds helps gives this a solid grounding.
All round, this title is one that I was more than happy to spend the time with, especially when added to a pace that allows you to take breathers whilst deciphering the clues as they’re unearthed, which when blended with good prose and of course dialogue that really fires the imagination all round gave me a very pleasurable evening. Great stuff.

A South African novel that brings a lot of the modern classic influences into it. Whilst I wasn’t enamoured of the book, I did like the concept, I liked the idea’s explored within and could see the work that had gone into it.
Personally I found the principle character hard to get on with, I felt that it took a while to get anywhere and for me, it’s a series that I won’t be returning to as it’s not struck me as a must read. Whilst there will be quite a few readers out there that will love the book, for me it didn’t hit the right spot, leaving this more as a marmite type of title.

To be honest this was a book that I became interested in purely for the fact that I wanted to read up a little bit more from the female point of view in the French Revolution and whilst I was fully aware of Napoleon during this time, I really didn’t know anything about his first wife Josephine (or rather Marie Josèphe Rose (her birth name.)
So whilst I had originally picked this up on a whim to learn more, what I managed to obtain from this book was a figure of strong womanhood, who not only managed to change herself like a chameleon to suit her social status’ but also managed to escape the guillotine a fete in itself. She was charismatic, she was a fascinating character and whilst many tend to think that Napoleon was the power in the relationship, in reality it was more an equal footing for both.
All round this book not only kept me glued but when backed up with solid research which is presented in an easy to follow manner, all round I was hooked from the first chapter onwards. Great stuff.

I love a story that tries something different and for me this thriller by Paul Carson delivered as I was taken into an Ireland that had a realistic backstory that brought modern history to the fore alongside generating a read that was not only gripping but something that was nigh impossible to put down.
The prose was sharp, the key character someone that I was more than happy to share headspace with and all round allowed me to delve into something that I wouldn’t normally have given reading time to as I’m not really a fan of modern history. All round a great piece of writing and definitely an author I’ll keep an eye on for future releases.

To be honest, whilst I’ve read Tom’s writing before, this one felt more than a little flat to me as the story went from interesting concept and question posed to the ridiculous as things went south pretty quickly. The characters felt little more than 2D with the writing not really taking them anywhere within other than a forced line and for me it was something that told its own tale throughout the book.
Add to this no real depth of excitement for me, sadly plain and overly complex idea’s that could have been explored deeper to help give a more rounded tone and all round left me feeling pretty flat. A great shame as I’d had high hopes for this.

Ben is an author I’ve loved for years and as such, he’s an author that has gone from strength to strength especially with his latest series following the war between Carthage and Rome. It brings the past to life, giving the reader a sense of the time not only politically but also from each civilisations point of view which when backed with characters that the reader can easily associate with all round gives you a great reading experience.
Back this up with an additive writing style, some great combat sequences and of course some wonderful lulls with cracking dialogue and all round I was a happy reader.

To be honest I can be a real sucker (no pun intended with this book) for an age old love story and this is what Alma has done wonderfully well within this, the third and final outing of the series. As with the previous two instalments, the story has a wonderful summation at the beginning (so if you haven’t done a reread prior to starting you don’t have to worry) and when added to the development of her principle players (along with excellent backstory flashes) makes this a book that is a “just one more chapter before bed” late night read.
It has solid prose, a wonderful turn of pace and when you add the scope embraced within alongside some cracking twits all round gives the reader a golden glow upon completion after the cast has seen the final curtain. It’s heart-breaking in places, jovial in others and takes you through a whole roller-coaster throughout that really was a joy to spend time with. All round a great book and thanks Alma for giving it redemption as well as emotional plucking to see it on its way.

Will Carver is an author that delivers a crime title that not only chills you to the marrow but also delivers a storyline that is hard to let go of. The characters are solid, fully believable and when the author throws situations their way, you can see the workings of their minds as they seek to find the answers to the crimes that they face.
Its definitely something that works wonderfully well and when you throw into the mix a darkly delicious thrill ride you know damn well that you’ve got a book that’s going to more than hit the spot. If you want a book to help you unwind after a hard couple of days, this is the title for you, although it may well effect your sleep as that reader niggle of “One more chapter” will become more than an acquaintance.

There’s always a danger when a book delves into what many see as a classic that it will either ruin the original or just be seen as a story that is designed to cash in on the fame of what has gone before. What this title by Royce does is take the mythos behind the script of Stokers classic and build upon the lore pertaining to the Lords of the Undead. It’s creepy, it has a real feeling of authenticity and for me, was a story that I absolutely loved as I devoured the pages to see what would happen next.
Add to this a principle character that the readers will enjoy spending time with as well as a wonderfully dark and evocative description of the landscape and all round as a reader I was more than immersed until the final page turned. Great stuff.

Having enjoyed Debbie’s last title in this series, I really couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book as I knew that the way that she weaved magic, characters and storyline would more than give me something special to savour. What unfurled was a story that not only gave me what I wanted as a reader but helped expand upon the world of the original.
As with the first, the principle character was fun to be around, you cared for her and when added to some cracking twists, some real danger that made you want her to survive backed up with a real kickass plot made this an experience that I was more than pleased to enjoy.
All round a great book and a series that I can’t help but recommend to fans of the Urban Fantasy.

I’m a huge fan of the Star Wars Universe so when I get chance to delve into the dark times when the Jedi were in hiding and Vader was at his pinnacle, I really can’t wait to see what happens. This book by Michael and Maya hits a lot of my expectations with a cracking lead character, some wonderful illusion and brings to the fore a sleight of hand so much so that you’re left wondering how its going to continue so much so that when I hit about half way through and was left for a while in the doldrums until it picked up again a little later, almost as if the story had been expanded from a very sharp novella to reach novel length.
This of course left me feeling a little cheated and to be blunt I’d rather have cut out a lot of the unnecessary bumf that was added purely so I could keep to the meat of the tale. That said it is still a cracking story but for me, the editing could have been tighter to keep the reader on the edge of their seats.
