FANTASY REVIEW: The Gentleman Bastards 3: The Republic of Thieves - Scott Lynch

Release Date: 08/10/13
Publisher:  Gollancz

SYNOPSIS:

After their adventures on the high seas, Locke and Jean are brought back to earth with a thump. Jean is mourning the loss of his lover and Locke must live with the fallout of crossing the all-powerful magical assassins, the Bonds Magi. It is a fallout that will pit both men against Locke's own long lost love. Sabetha is Locke's childhood sweetheart, the love of Locke's life and now it is time for them to meet again. Employed on different sides of a vicious dispute between factions of the Bonds, Sabetha has just one goal - to destroy Locke for ever. The Gentleman Bastard sequence has become a literary sensation in fantasy circles and now, with the third book, Scott Lynch is set to seal that success.

REVIEW:

I’ve loved Scott’s previous titles in the Gentleman Bastard series so when this title arrived I really couldn’t wait to get back to my old friends and see what Scott would put them through this time. What unfurls within is a cracking story of move and counter move as Locke and Jean are forced into the campaign against former Sister Bastard Sabetha. It’s wonderfully thought out, has some great twists and when you add in a pre-story that shows how they’ve learned to adapt emotionally makes this my favourite fantasy of the year to date.

Throw into this great prose, wonderful pace and of course characters that you just love to spend time around all round makes this a book that you can’t put down. Scott is back with a vengeance. Magic.
