URBAN FANTASY REVIEW: The City and the City - China Mieville

BOOK BLURB:

When the body of a murdered woman is found in the extraordinary, decaying city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks like a routine case for Inspector Tyador BorlĂș of the Extreme Crime Squad. But as he probes, the evidence begins to point to conspiracies far stranger, and more deadly, than anything he could have imagined. Soon his work puts him and those he cares for in danger.

BorlĂș must travel to the only metropolis on Earth as strange as his own, across a border like no other. It is a journey as psychic as it is physical, a shift in perception, a seeing of the unseen, a journey to Beszel's equal, rival, and intimate neighbor, the rich and vibrant city of Ul Qoma.

REVIEW:

With a number of readers being a bit disappointed with China’s last release, this latest offering had to give the readers something special which he managed to do. Carefully blending fantasy with a pulp noir fiction the tale really does clip along in such a way that it keeps the reader glued to the last page as well as allowing the reader to follow and try to solve the case as they continue with the principle protagonist.

Lovingly crafted, beautiful world building and a tale that keeps you guessing to the last China has definitely retained his previous form presenting the reader with a book that will enthuse you long after the final page is turned.
